Service agreement template for small businesses

A service agreement is a written contract between you and a client that sets out the services you will provide, the fee, when it is due, how appointments can be changed and how the arrangement ends. Fill in six fields to build one and read the whole thing in the preview before paying for a download.

What a good service agreement settles

Most small-business misunderstandings are about money and time: what was included, when payment was due and what happens when someone cancels. A written agreement puts those answers in one place. It also protects the client by saying what you will do and how you will perform it.

Service agreement or liability waiver?

A service agreement is about the business deal. A liability waiver is about physical and personal risk. If your service involves hands-on activity, animals, food or children, you will probably want both. The business starter pack on this site includes both and a client intake form.

Tips

Describe the service concretely, for example "weekly lawn mowing and edging, front and back yard." Write fees the way you quote them. Ask a licensed attorney in your state to review the agreement, especially if the contract value is high.

Build it in four steps

  1. Enter your business and the client. Names as they appear on invoices.
  2. Describe the services and fee. Be specific.
  3. Pick payment timing. Up front, half and half, on completion or monthly.
  4. Preview and edit. Change any clause, then download when downloads open.

Questions and answers

Do I need a service agreement for every client?

No law requires one for every job. Many small businesses use one for recurring work or larger jobs, because it records the price, scope and cancellation terms. A licensed attorney in your state can advise you.

What is the difference between a service agreement and a contract?

A service agreement is a kind of contract focused on services you provide. Any agreement with agreed terms and something exchanged on both sides is a contract; written ones are easier to prove.

Can I charge a cancellation fee?

The template says a fee applies only if you and the client agreed to one in writing. Add the amount by editing the clause.

Is the agreement editable?

Yes, every clause can be edited in the preview and your edits are kept on your device.
